How to Join the Invictus Community and Change Your Life – Part 2
Written by Brand Spankin’ New Invictus Member Emily Hesse

I had never realized until recently how important it is to concentrate on proper form when working out. I mean, I knew it was important before, but nothing like Iʼve learned in the fundamentals classes.

What a difference it makes too. I feel so much more comfortable with the movements once I get the form right. During the fundamentals classes my trainer, Nichole, takes her time to walk me through each movement and make sure that Iʼm staying consistent and getting the best possible result from that exercise.

Itʼs nice to actually get excited to go to the gym and be able to practice the new fundamentals that Iʼve learned. This was not me before. Now on the way to Invictus I wonder “what are we going to work on today?” “what new things are we going to learn?” When I was attending more traditional gyms, I knew exactly what to expect, and that was boredom and inconsistency.

One of the things I particularly like in the Invictus community is that when weʼre done with our fundamentals class we sit down and discuss a lifestyle change that can be done to benefit our life outside of just exercising. I particularly like learning about better ways to eat. Exercise is not the only element to leading a healthier lifestyle, itʼs also about eating well. Unfortunately, thatʼs not always easy, and as a college student, Iʼm all about convenience and speed when it comes to getting my meals for the day. However, I still try my best to eat well. I try to eat organic foods and read labels so Iʼm aware of exactly what goes in to my body.

Nichole has shown me that incorporating good foods in my diet might take some planning, but it can and should be done. She encouraged me and the others in my class to start preparing our meals for the week on Sundays. To help us get started with that she sent us all recipes and great articles on all of the important elements that need to be in our everyday meals. This article on grains was helpful to me in understanding why itʼs important to eliminate certain things from my diet, http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/ 2001/05/010511074623.htm

Itʼs a complete lifestyle change that cannot be accomplished without support and dedication. Incorporating the people that are closest to me in my life is crucial. Nichole taught us that this change is feasible. She says that if we stick to it for at least 20 days straight it becomes second nature. The craving for the bad things will go away after that.

Iʼm eager to complete my fundamentals classes and begin in regular classes. Nichole and the other coaches at Invictus have been great at easing me into this wonderful community.
