Need Some Inspiration?
Written by C.J. Martin
If you’re looking for inspiration, the CrossFit Games Open always provides more than most can handle. This year, after just one week, has been no different.
The video above is Invictus athlete Jenny LaBaw, who got 150 reps on 13.1 . . . on one leg. I first met Jenny at the 2011 CrossFit Games, and knew instantly that she wasn’t just an amazing athlete, but also an incredible person. I started working with her as an athlete shortly after, and in no time at all she became one of my favorite people in the world because of her positive outlook on life. During the 2012 season she fought through a serious and at times debilitating neck injury, and despite having to significantly limit certain movements in training, won the Northern California Regionals to earn her second trip to the Games. This year she looked to return even stronger, and healthier.
Last Tuesday, March 5th – exactly one day before the first day of the CrossFit Open – Jenny was in a freak accident. You need to read her full account of the incident, but the summary is this: While riding her bicycle home from work, a homeless man on a bicycle whipped in front of her and they collided, sending Jenny flying over her handlebars and breaking her foot.
But Jenny’s account of the incident isn’t remarkable because of the ill timing, or the utter unlikeliness of this kind of thing happening. What is so powerful is her perspective, her awareness of her choices, and her decision to stay true to the ethos that has created her success as an athlete, coach, friend, etc…. You must read this: Jenny LaBaw: Burpees and Snatches and Tetris…Oh My!
Jenny is a shining example of the Invictus mindset – an unbreakable, indomitable spirit. She is a great athlete, no doubt, but her ability to inspire has nothing to do with her athletic ability, and everything to do with her perspective and approach to life.
Congratulations Jenny, and on behalf of the entire Invictus community, thank you for inspiring us all!

My cup runneth over… Invictus has accepted me as a member of their family since the first time I set foot in the door on a visit to train. CJ, Courtney, Nichole, Karen and Pops have let me eat their food, crash at their homes and given me inspiration and motivation to continue on this journey we all label as “CrossFit”. I am eternally grateful for the coaching, the pushing, the encouraging and mostly the friendships I have made being a part of this wonderful group of people. Good luck to everyone participating in the 2013 Open… remember we do… Read more »
