Bragging: Unbecoming, But Sometimes Necessary
Written by C.J. Martin
I try to foster an environment of humility. I believe our athletes perform best when they’re intrinsically motivated and not seeking external validation. I also believe that there are few things more annoying than people who brag about their achievements. Luckily, I have been blessed to surround myself with a whole mess of athletes who agree with these principles. But there comes a time that if my athletes won’t brag about themselves (for good reason), it is necessary for me to do it for them. Here’s why . . . these men and women have absolutely busted their butts for the last 6-12 months, and every once in a while they need to be recognized for all of their hard work. Now seems like a pretty appropriate time.
CrossFit Games Open 13.3 went very well for the Invictus athletes. Team Invictus took 1st place in the world on this workout, powered by scores from Josh Bridges (319 reps), Nuno Costa (293 reps), Hank Lopez (293 reps), Lauren Fisher (258 reps), Nichole DeHart (257 reps), and Ayo Anise (246 reps). But those weren’t the only superstars. Check out some of the other scores posted at Friday Night Lights:
* Lukas Esslinger – 269 reps
* Bryan Babbitt – 265 reps
* Justin Nahama – 264 reps
* Shane Farmer – 259 reps
* Tino Marini – 257 reps
* Lil’ Ricky Moore – 257 reps
* Mike Ingley – 255 reps
* Cody Burgener – 252 reps
* Steph McCormack – 243 reps (first muscle-ups in a workout)
* Kathy Borkoski – 241 reps
Of course, these are just the kids within the walls of Invictus. We had too many honorary Invictus athletes crush this to even list them, but the performances by Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (287 reps) and Noah Pester (288 reps) at least deserve a mention, as do those of Competition blog followers Bryan Miller (303 reps) and Lindsay Vaughan (262 reps) – both won the event in the Northwest region. The sheer volume of outstanding performances by all of our athletes is staggering, and a true testament to all of the hard work they have put in over the last several months. Congratulations to all of you who smashed your scores from 12.4!
Oh, and as if I wasn’t already on cloud nine after such an amazing weekend of performances . . . this happened today at the gym:
I want to brag on all of CJ’s athletes as amazing human beings as well!
The all around quality people Invictus attracts is a direct reflection of the tone set by CJ. What a phenomenal group and not just the ones in the gym- the remote athletes and athlete camps are just as impressive. GREAT STUFF happening here!
studs.
So blessed to be part of such an amazing group of people and friends . . . . who are really like family! Outstanding job to everyone on 13.3 and huge PRs yesterday And huge shout out to CJ whose humility precludes him for bragging about being a ROCKSTAR coach and friend.
Wow…thoroughly impressed.
Great job guys! Keep up the good work!
Sick numbers. Both in the 13.3 as in those C&J
